Scene of devastation at Sissano Lagoon, Papua New Guinea, following the tsunami of 17 July 1998. The photograph was taken 17 days after the event, on the spit of land separating the Bismarck Sea (not shown) from Sissano Lagoon (visible in back). Note the bucket in the tree, at an altitude of 7 m, providing a minimum bound for the amplitude of the wave at this location, on the inland side of the sandspit. The bent stilts are all that remains from a house, where the village of Arop once stood. [Photograph by J.C. Borrero].
